In our November 2026 audit of 421 US balloon businesses without a website, 58% (244 of 421) had no link of any kind in their Instagram bio: no booking page, no form, not even a Linktree. For those businesses, a client who's ready to book has to DM, comment, or give up, and this post covers what that costs you and the 20-minute fix.
This is one finding from our State of the Balloon Business 2026 report.
What we found in 421 balloon business bios
First, the bigger picture. We checked 1,192 US balloon businesses on Instagram, and 757 of them (64%) had no real website. From that no-website group, we audited 421 bios in detail to see what a client actually gets when they tap the profile.
| Bio link | Businesses | Share of 421 |
|---|---|---|
| No link at all | 244 | 58% |
| Social link only | 72 | 17% |
| Linktree | 56 | 13% |
| Form or portal only | 40 | 10% |
(Rounded; a handful of bios didn't fit these four types.)
Two more numbers from the same 421 bios:
- 33% explicitly say to book through DMs ("DM to book", "message me").
- 1% (4 of 421) show any starting price or minimum.
Only the 40 businesses with a form or portal (10%) give a client a direct way to submit an inquiry. Everyone else is running bookings through the inbox, whether they say so or not.
Why "no link" means "no way to book"
Picture the client. She's planning her daughter's birthday, it's 10pm, and she's scrolling with an inspo pic saved. She finds your garland, loves it, taps your profile. No link. A "DM to book" line.
Now she has to write a message from scratch, wait for you to answer, and answer your questions about date, venue and guest count one at a time. Meanwhile the next decorator in her search has a page where she can pick a date and drop her photo in. You don't lose her because your work is worse. You lose her because booking you takes more effort.
Here's what a missing link actually costs:
- Clients who don't DM. Plenty of people won't message a stranger. Without a link, they have no other option.
- Half-finished inquiries. "How much for this?" with no date, no venue, no size. You spend three messages just getting to a quote.
- Lost threads. Inquiries spread across Instagram, Facebook, texts and comments get buried. Ghosted quotes show up in the group posts we analyzed too (24 of 2,111).
The math: what a dead-end bio can cost you
Example, with numbers you should swap for your own. Say 20 people a month tap your profile ready to ask about a party. If a no-link bio means even 5 of them leave instead of DMing, and you book 1 in 4 inquiries, that's:
5 lost inquiries × 1 in 4 booked = 1.25 bookings a month
At an average job of $400, that's 1.25 × $400 = $500 a month, or $6,000 a year, walking away before you ever said hello. Your real numbers will be different. The point is that the leak is quiet, so you never see it.
How to fix your bio link today (20 minutes)
You don't need a website to fix this. You need one link that takes an inquiry properly.
- Pick one destination. A booking page with an inquiry form is best. A Linktree is better than nothing, but it's one more tap before the client gets anywhere useful.
- Make the form ask the right questions. Date, venue or address, indoor or outdoor, guest count, what they want, budget, and an inspo photo upload. See the 9 inquiry form fields that replace 40 DMs.
- Put the link in your bio and say what it does. "Book your date ↓" or "Check your date + get a quote ↓" works better than a bare URL.
- Add a starting price. Even one line ("Garlands from $X") filters bargain hunters and reassures the right clients. Only 1% of audited bios do this, so it sets you apart instantly.
- Turn on alerts. Get an email the moment an inquiry comes in, so you can reply fast.
Keep DMs, but route them
You'll still get DMs, and that's fine. The fix is a saved reply that moves the conversation to your form, so every inquiry arrives with the details you need.
Hi! Thanks so much for reaching out. So I can check your date and get you an accurate quote, could you fill out this quick form? It takes about 2 minutes: [your link]. As soon as it comes in, I'll send your quote.
And for "how much?" messages with no details:
Great question! Most of my garlands start at $X, depending on size and colors. If you send your date and venue through this form, I'll put together an exact quote for you: [your link]

What this means if you already have a link
If you're in the 42% with some kind of link, check where it goes. A link to your Facebook page sends the client to another profile with the same "message me" problem. A Linktree with eight buttons makes them choose. Tap your own bio link on your phone like a client would and count the taps to "I sent an inquiry." If it's more than two, simplify.
And if your followers aren't booking even with a link, the problem may be what happens after the inquiry: slow replies and quotes that go quiet. Why clients ghost your balloon quotes covers that half.
Frequently asked questions
How many balloon businesses have no link in their Instagram bio?
In our November 2026 audit of 421 US balloon businesses without a website, 244 (58%) had no link of any kind in their Instagram bio. Another 17% had only a social link, 13% a Linktree, and 10% a form or portal.
Is a Linktree enough for a balloon business?
A Linktree is better than no link, but it adds a step and usually leads to more links, not an inquiry. A booking page with a form that collects date, venue, guest count and an inspo photo turns a curious visitor into an inquiry in one step.
Do I need a website to take balloon bookings?
No. You need one link that takes a complete inquiry and alerts you when it arrives. A free booking page can do that. A full website helps with Google and credibility later, but it isn't required to stop losing clients from your bio.
Should I stop saying "DM to book"?
You don't have to stop taking DMs, but don't make them the only option. Put a booking link in your bio and use a saved reply that sends DM inquiries to your form, so every inquiry has the details you need to quote.
